Description
Organic Green Tea Details

Organic Green Tea is our everyday green tea: a clean, vibrant loose leaf cup made from organic, single-origin leaves. It is light and smooth, with gentle grassy notes, a hint of natural sweetness and a refreshing finish. Simple, unflavored and easy to love, it is the green tea to keep in the cupboard for any time of day, hot or iced.

  • Size: 1 oz of loose leaf tea.
  • Ingredient: Organic single-origin green tea (Camellia sinensis).
  • Caffeine: Contains caffeine, roughly 20–45 mg per 8 oz cup.
  • Brew: 1–2 teaspoons per 8 oz of water at 170–180°F (not boiling). Steep 2–3 minutes, then strain.

What Is Green Tea?

Green tea is made from the same plant as black, oolong and white tea, Camellia sinensis. The difference is in the processing: soon after picking, green tea leaves are heated, by pan-firing or steaming, to stop them oxidizing. That keeps the leaves green and gives the tea its fresh, light, grassy flavor and a lower caffeine level than black tea.

There are hundreds of green tea styles, from grassy Japanese sencha to toasty Chinese pan-fired teas. Our Organic Green Tea is a straightforward, unflavored green tea for everyday drinking. For more on styles, brewing and history, read our green tea guide.

Meet Our Organic Green Tea

Our organic green tea brews a clear, pale yellow-green cup with a fresh, green aroma. The flavor is light and grassy with a subtle sweetness and a smooth, clean, refreshing finish. There is no added flavoring and, brewed at the right temperature, no bitterness. Packed to order in a 1 oz size.

How To Brew Green Tea

Hot: green tea needs cooler water than black tea. Heat water to 170–180°F, or let boiling water rest for 2 to 3 minutes. Use 1 to 2 teaspoons per 8 oz and steep 2 to 3 minutes, then strain. Water that is too hot or a steep that is too long is the most common reason green tea tastes bitter.

Re-steeping: the same leaves give a second, lighter cup; add about 30 seconds.

Iced: cold brew 2 tablespoons in 32 oz of cold water in the fridge for 6 to 8 hours, then strain. It comes out smooth and naturally sweet. Add lemon or mint if you like.

Does Green Tea Have Caffeine?

Yes. Green tea contains caffeine, roughly 20–45 mg in an 8 oz cup. That is less than black tea and far less than coffee. Cooler water, shorter steeps and cold brewing all give a gentler cup. For no caffeine at all, try one of our caffeine-free herbal teas.

Organic Green Tea FAQ

Does green tea have caffeine?

+
Yes, roughly 20–45 mg in an 8 oz cup, less than black tea and far less than coffee.

What temperature should I brew green tea?

+
170–180°F, below boiling. If you do not have a thermometer, let boiling water rest for 2 to 3 minutes. Boiling water makes green tea bitter.

How long should I steep green tea?

+
2 to 3 minutes. Taste at 2 minutes; longer steeps bring out bitterness.

Why does my green tea taste bitter?

+
Almost always because the water was too hot or the steep too long. Try cooler water and a shorter steep.

Does green tea help with weight loss?

+
Plain green tea has almost no calories, which makes it a good swap for sugary drinks. Research on green tea and metabolism is mixed and the effects are small, so it is best seen as part of an overall healthy routine. Our green tea and weight loss guide goes into more detail.

Can I make iced green tea?

+
Yes. Cold brew 2 tablespoons in 32 oz of cold water in the fridge for 6 to 8 hours, then strain. It is smooth and naturally sweet.

Can I re-steep green tea?

+
Yes. The same leaves give a second, lighter cup; add about 30 seconds to the steep.

How much green tea do I use per cup?

+
One to two teaspoons of loose leaf per 8 oz of water. Start with one and adjust to taste.
