What Is Honeybush Tea?
Honeybush is an herbal tea made from shrubs of the Cyclopia genus, which grow wild in the mountains of South Africa’s Eastern and Western Cape. It is a close relative of rooibos and is not related to the tea plant (Camellia sinensis), so it contains no caffeine at all. The plant’s yellow flowers smell of honey, which is where the name comes from.
To make the tea, the leaves and stems are cut and oxidized, which turns them a warm reddish-brown and develops their sweet, mellow flavor. People have brewed honeybush in South Africa for generations, and it has become popular worldwide as a naturally sweet, caffeine-free alternative to black tea.
Meet Our Honeybush
Our organic honeybush brews a clear amber-red cup with a sweet, warm aroma. The flavor is smooth and gently sweet, with soft floral notes and a honey-like finish, and there is almost no astringency. It tastes a little like a lighter, sweeter rooibos. Many people drink it without any sweetener at all. Packed to order in a 1 oz size.
How To Brew Honeybush Tea
Hot: use 1 to 2 teaspoons per 8 oz of water just below boiling. Steep 3 to 5 minutes, then strain. Honeybush is very forgiving: a longer steep makes it deeper and sweeter rather than bitter, so you can leave it a few extra minutes.
With milk: honeybush takes milk and honey well, like a caffeine-free English Breakfast. Steep the full 5 minutes for a fuller cup.
Iced: cold brew 2 tablespoons in 32 oz of cold water in the fridge for 8 to 12 hours, or brew it hot and double-strength and pour over ice. Add a slice of orange or a few hibiscus flowers for color and tartness.
Is Honeybush Tea Caffeine-Free?
Yes. Honeybush is not made from the tea plant, so it is naturally caffeine-free, with nothing removed or processed out. That makes it a good choice for evenings, for anyone avoiding caffeine, and as a warm, familiar-tasting swap for black tea. If you want caffeine-free cups with different flavors, browse our herbal teas and calming evening teas.
